The 2nd 6 Weeks will start on Monday, October 7, 2013. The students will be given a new spelling list and a new vocabulary list that includes all the words for the 6 weeks. Please help your student keep up with these lists and help them study for the Spelling Tests and Vocabulary Tests on Fridays.
In Reading, we will be starting a new novel called Caddie Woodlawn. It is a wonderful novel based on the life and memories of the author - Carol Ryrie Brink's grandmother, Caroline Woodlawn. It is set back in the pioneer days when the country was not totally settled. There are adventures with Caddie and her brothers and tales of Indian sightings. I think the students will enjoy this novel and the activities included in this study.
Throughout the 6 weeks we will be working on Reading skills including classifying words, following directions, sequencing, main idea, fact and opinion, drawing conclusions and cause and effect and a fun project on biographies.
In Spelling will will be working on skills including vowel + /r/ sounds, homophones, compound words and final schwa + /r/ sounds. We will also be working on Grammar skills including verbs and pronouns.
Please check your child's binder each week, but leave all papers in the binder until the end of the 6 weeks. The binders are cleaned out with the teachers. We ask that you leave all papers in the binders because sometimes we use the graded papers in class or the students use them to study for tests and sometimes we allow them to use these as information sources on tests and activities.
